TEHRAN (IQNA) – Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) is a phrase used to refer to the families of prophets of God.

Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS)

The Quran uses the phrase three times to refer to the families of Prophet Abraham (AS), Prophet Moses (AS), and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH).

The Holy Book mentions names of some of divine prophets. In some Quranic stories, the names of family members and relatives of messengers of God is also mentioned.

There are also some family members and relatives of prophets that the Quran points to without naming them directly and we recognize them using history books and Quran interpretations.

That is also the case for the relatives of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). Their names is not directly mentioned in the Quran, but according to Quran interpreters, some verses refers to the household of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) who are known in religious texts as Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).

Based on the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) remarks, the Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) are five figures: The Prophet (PBUH) himself, Ali ibn Abi Talib, Hazrat Zahra (SA), and Imam Hassan (AS) and Imam Hussein (AS), the sons of Imam Ali (AS) and Hazrat Zahra (SA). Some verses of the Quran refers to these five figures.

The phrase Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) comes three times in the Quran. The first and second are in Verse 12 of Surah Al-Qasas referring to the family of Prophet Moses (AS) and Verse 73 of Surah Hud referring to the family of Prophet Abraham (AS).

The third is in Verse 33 of Surah Al-Azhab: “O Family of the House, Allah only wishes to distance fault from you, and to cleanse you, and to purify you abundantly.”

In this verse, which is known as the Verse of Tat’heer, Ahl-ul-Bayt or Family of the House refers to the family of the Holy Prophet (PBUH). After this verse was revealed, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and the other four (Imam Ali (AS), Hazrat Zahra (SA), Imam Hassan (AS) and Imam Hussein (AS)) went under the cloak and the Prophet (PBUH) said: “O God! These are my Ahl-ul-Bayt. Keep them away from evil.”

Another verse in the Quran that points to the Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS) is Verse 61 of Surah Al Imran, which is known as the Verse of Mubahilah: “If anyone disputes (your prophesy) after knowledge has come to you, say, ‘Let each of us bring our children, women, our people, and ourselves to one place and pray to God to condemn the liars among us.’”

Muslim interpreters are unanimous in believing that this verse refers to the Holy Prophet’s (PBUH) Ahl-ul-Bayt (AS).

And there is also Verse 23 of Surah Ash-Shura: “This is the glad news which God gives to His servants, the righteously striving believers. (Muhammad), say, ‘I do not ask you for any payment for my preaching to you except (your) love of (my near) relatives.’ Whoever achieves virtue will have its merit increased. God is All-forgiving and Appreciating.”

According to Hadiths, when the Holy Prophet (PBUH) was asked about “relatives” in this verse, he replied, “They are Ali and Fatimah and their two sons (Hassan and Hussein).”
